• "Bill Does Tout Biometrics for Firms"

  The New Employee Verification Act, which I introduced earlier this year along with a fellow Arizonan, Rep. Harry Mitchell, would establish a voluntary program in which employers could enroll and use biometric identifiers to ensure that their new hires are authorized to work in the United States. The program is designed to improve on the current E-Verify system, which is vulnerable to abuse through identity theft and document fraud.

  The legislation mandates that all employers sign up for the Electronic Employment Verification System, which is based on the new-hire system used in each state to enforce child support payments. About 90 percent of employers use the new-hire system already.
• E-Verify Deadline Postponed Again

  The Homeland Security Department has pushed back the deadline for implementing the final rule for contractors to use the E-Verify employment verification system for another six weeks. The new deadline is June 30.
