


Missouri
States are increasingly considering laws establishing employment eligibility verification requirements. In Missouri, one such bill has been enacted. Though the demand for quick action that compels Missouri lawmakers and their colleagues across the nation is understandable, creating a patchwork of uncoordinated verification systems undermines the efficacy of existing and potential federal approaches.

HB 1549: Final version (May 16, 2008) prohibits business entities and employers from knowingly employing, hiring, or continuing to employ unauthorized workers to perform work in Missouri. All public employers and business entities receiving a state contract or grant in excess of $5,000 or a state-administered tax credit, tax abatement, or loan from the state must by sworn affidavit affirm their participation in E-Verify. Effective January 1, 2009.
